Vegas Baby!

Woke up to a huge black spider on my bed.  The cleaning guy told me the name of it was  “I blanked it out cause it sounded scarey” and that they can make you sick for days.  He asked where it went and told him that it ran behind the bed.  Then he back out of the room, said, “I don’t feel like dying today, I’ll take care of it later.”  So don’t stay in room #72 at Stovepipe Wells, Death Valley, CA.
After that fun moment, I took a couple pictures from the motel and hit the road.  Death Valley is appropriately named.  I drove out to Beatty, NV—a trailer park of a town in the middle of nowhere.  Their closest neighboring town is a ghost town just outside a park called Death Valley.  I didn’t stop to check out the local color.

cute little birds were everywhere chirping for their dinner

I like clouds

The only other incident along the way to Alison’s house was being followed by the Las Vegas Paranormal Investigators.  They followed me for 2 stops (grab a drink and then stop for gas) and then got off onto the brand new ramp I took to Alison’s.  Behind me, they took all the same turns behind me until I pulled into her neighborhood.  I was just hoping Alison’s wasn’t the house needing paranormal investigators.
Alison and I caught up over lunch and then headed out to see Red Rocks and the tortoises.  She let me have a little internet time first. The tortoises had gone to bed for the day so we miss out on them but the sunset in the little valley was beautiful.

Can you see the turtle in this picture?

Sorry Alison, I mean tortoise

Desert wildlife captured on camera for the first time!

We had an okay buffet dinner at the Palms and then a drive down the strip followed by a walk through casinos, shopping “venues” and outdoor shows.  I was much more impressed by the water show in front of the Bellagio versus the TI’s pirate/siren show.  I guess the good pirates were performing inside and getting paid.
Crazy candied apples--smores apple anyone?

Death Valley by way of Yosemite

So, I am driving to Atlanta from San Francisco.  By myself.  And with no timeline.  The benefit of not having that thing called a job.  I'm doing it in a half-planned way of calling friends across the country and telling them to air out the guest bedroom because I'm coming to visit.  The fun part is that they are not all on a straight line and I have as much time (as $$ allows) to zigzag between them.  Yay!

Day 1--drive to Death Valley.  Not very well thought out on my part but an enjoyable ride all the same.  No easy way to get there...
Started at sea level in SF and drove up Yosemite National Park to 10,000 ft. and then all the way down to 2000, back up 5000, and down to sea level again in Death Valley.  Greg’s mix was great and got me through Yosemite.  And made me laugh.  Cruised to my AK/CA mix before that.  I made it until 3ish before I got tired and needed caffeine.  But in an audio book, _Smash Cut_, to carry me through the rest of the afternoon/evening.  CA 290 was a fun road but way too many people on it.  So happy when the road finally opened up and I could really call it the "open road."  Inyo Park reminded me of Alaska but not quite so grand.  I had cell and internet at surprising times.  Not at all in Death Valley or CA 190.  Turned Prudence (my GPS) off for a couple hours when my directions and hers differed.  Arrived at Stovepipe Wells around 6:30 to spend the night.

See Chrissy, I made my wish and the trip is on!

lost that hub cap again

Look Ma! No guardrails!

Followed this guy through a long stretch of Yosemite

The snow has started.  Do you think they call it termination dust too?

These little guy were everywhere and in every color.  Some rental company must have gotten a great deal

chez Wonder

Wonder and I had some unfinished business to take care of.
Finished now.
Mischief managed.
Wonder, I will miss our long, rambling, whiskey-fueled conversations.  Look forward to many more, just not as frequent...
